Information System
The project's aim was to develop an open source, open architecture, expandable system for our prototype lifeboat that delivers some of the capability of a full system, but appropriate for small open craft. The final project used Raspberry Pi hardwhare which could:
- Navigate, accepting GPS and Inertial Navigation System input
- Use electronic charts (e.g. Navionics charts (or similar))
- Connect to a satellite data transponder
- Accept an AIS picture
- Accept a radar picture
- Accept a depth sounder and speed log input
- Run other applications as identified by the project team.
- Be future proof.
The hardware had to have an emphasis on extreme ruggedness to operate on a small boat. Consideration was given on survivability of the hardware (from shock, water etc) as well as the human-machine interface.
In this project I was elected into the role of Project Manager. Some of my duties included organising meetings, communicating with Atlantic Pacific and overlooking of general assembly.
