Information System

The project's aim was to develop an open source, open architecture, expandable system for our prototype lifeboat that delivers some of the capability of a full system, but appropriate for small open craft. The final project used Raspberry Pi hardwhare which could:

  1. Navigate, accepting GPS and Inertial Navigation System input
  2. Use electronic charts (e.g. Navionics charts (or similar))
  3. Connect to a satellite data transponder
  4. Accept an AIS picture
  5. Accept a radar picture
  6. Accept a depth sounder and speed log input
  7. Run other applications as identified by the project team.
  8. Be future proof.

The hardware had to have an emphasis on extreme ruggedness to operate on a small boat. Consideration was given on survivability of the hardware (from shock, water etc) as well as the human-machine interface.

In this project I was elected into the role of Project Manager. Some of my duties included organising meetings, communicating with Atlantic Pacific and overlooking of general assembly.
